• What is Mocean Carshare?

    Mocean Carshare is a carshare service that offers self-service, on-demand cars by the minute, hour or day. We provide a free-floating carsharing service where you can pick up and return the car to any public parking spot within the home zone that shows up in the app. Your phone acts as your key throughout the entire journey.

  • Where does Mocean Carshare currently operate?

    We are currently operating in two home zones, one covering a large portion of downtown Los Angeles and another in the Eagle Rock neighborhood near Occidental College. The most up to date home zone areas will always be found in our mobile app. We also have dedicated parking spots at Union Station.

    We are always looking for expansion opportunities so we invite you to let us know if you’d like to see us in your neighborhood or if there may be a partnership opportunity to bring our service to more people.

  • How do I apply to use Mocean Carshare?

    In order to use Mocean Carshare, you will need to apply and be approved as a member. We charge a $12 application fee. Under certain circumstances, the application fee may be waived.

    To qualify as a member, you need to:

    • Have a smartphone which supports the Mocean Carshare app (iOS or Android).
    • Be at least 18 years old.
    • Accept the Mocean Carshare Terms & Conditions.
    • Have an active mobile phone connection.
    • Possess a valid, U.S. state issued driver’s license which is not suspended, revoked, or restricted.
    • Possess a valid, active credit card that matches the name of your driver’s license.
  • What kind of cars do you offer?

    We currently offer a fuel-efficient fleet of Hyundai Ioniq and Kia Niro hybrid vehicles. We plan to expand the variety of cars in the future.

  • Where am I able to drive with Mocean Carshare?

    You can drive anywhere in the contiguous US as long as you return the car within 24 hours to a public parking spot in an active home zone, as indicated in the app. The vehicle must not be in danger of tow or impound for 48 hours from the end of your trip. Please review all parking signs and posted notices, and restrictions relevant to the parking spot where you end your trip.

  • I did not complete registration the first time. How do I complete registration?

    If you have created an account but did not complete registration completely the first time, you can provide the required information for registration (personal information, selfie, driver’s license, and billing information) in the “My Account” section of the menu in the app. 

    Login using the email and password combination you created and add in any missing information in your profile. If you have any questions or have any issues, please contact Customer Care.

  • How long does the approval process take?

    Typically, the approval process should be completed within 24 hours. 

  • Which payment methods are accepted?

    We currently accept credit cards issued by Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Prepaid cards and cash are not accepted at this time.

  • How do I redeem a promo code?

    To apply a promo code, please enter it in the promo code field during the registration process or login to the Mocean Carshare app and find the promo code section in the menu.

  • Where can I park?

    During your trip, you are able to park Mocean Carshare vehicles at City of Los Angeles parking meters without payment and in excess of posted time limits. If the official address is listed within the City as Los Angeles, CA, then public parking at that address is included. For example, if you park in downtown Los Angeles at a parking meter that has a 2-hour limit, you don’t have to pay the meter and you can leave it for longer than 2 hours.

    You are responsible for all private and commercial parking fees. You are responsible for all public parking fees outside of the area monitored by the City of Los Angeles. This includes adjacent cities such as Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Culver City, South Pasadena, Pasadena, Glendale, Monterey Park, Alhambra and others, as well as all areas outside of the greater Los Angeles area.

    Tow away zones, commuting and convertible lanes, commercial, and private parking restrictions apply. Please review all applicable parking signs, posted notices, and restrictions. If your vehicle is towed or receives a citation, you will be billed per the terms and conditions in the rental agreement. This can be found in the Pricing and Payment section of the FAQs.

    When you are done with your trip, you must return your vehicle to a public parking spot within the home zone defined in the app. The vehicle must not be in danger of tow or impound for 48 hours from the end of your trip. Please review all parking signs, posted notices, and restrictions relevant to the parking spot where you end your trip.

    If you are close to Union Station, you can check the 5 assigned parking spots that we have at that location. We cannot guarantee that any of these spaces will be available for you to end your trip and they cannot be reserved.

  • What do I do if the Mocean Carshare parking spots are occupied or blocked?

    Currently, we offer 5 dedicated parking spots at Union Station. If these spots are occupied, please find a public parking spot within the home zone, as defined in the app. 

    Public parking (at a meter) in the City of Los Angeles is included with your Mocean Carshare rental. The vehicle must not be in danger of tow or impound for 48 hours from the end of your trip. Please review all relevant parking signs, posted notices, and restrictions relevant to the parking spot where you end your trip.

  • Can I sign up if I have an international driver’s license?

    Currently, we do not accept international driver’s licenses.

  • Why do you need my selfie?

    The selfie of you taken during the application process is used to verify your identity by comparing it with the picture on your driver’s license. This is done to prevent fraud and make rides safer. Please be sure to remove any hats or sunglasses before taking your selfie during the application process.

  • How do I find an available car?

    Cars are easily found in the Mocean Carshare app available in the Google Play and Apple App Store. If you are near multiple vehicles, make sure you have selected the correct car by identifying the model, color, and license plate. You will only be able to see vehicles that are available for booking.

    The list view option displays the list of available cars sorted by distance and can be found on the top right corner of the map screen.

  • Where can I drop off the car at the end of my trip?

    When you are done with your trip, you must return your vehicle to a public parking spot within the home zone defined in the app. The vehicle must not be in danger of tow or impound for 48 hours from the end of your trip.   • How long can I use a Mocean Carshare vehicle for?

    You can use the car for a maximum of 24 hours on a single trip. Your trip can be extended if certain conditions are met. If you wish to use the vehicle for longer. Please contact Customer Care.

  • How do I reserve a car?

    In the app, tap “Book This Car” in order to reserve the vehicle you want.

  • How much time do I have between reserving a car and starting the trip?

    You have 15 minutes to start the trip after you have reserved a car. If you do not arrive at the car in time and start your trip, the booking will be canceled and you will have to try to book the car again.

  • Can I cancel my reservation?

    If you need to cancel the reservation, tap “Cancel” in the app.

  • How do I begin a trip?

    After you have reserved the car, stand near the car with the Mocean Carshare app open. You can use the Mocean app to begin the trip by tapping the “Unlock” button. This will unlock the vehicle.

  • How do I unlock and start my car?

    When you are near your reserved vehicle, the app will connect with the car and enable you to unlock the door. Once you unlock the car, this would be a good time to perform a damage inspection. Once inside the car, step on the brake and press the “Engine Start/Stop” button in the car to start the engine.

  • How do I end a trip?

    Once you have parked the vehicle in a public parking spot in an active home zone, gather all your belongings before leaving the vehicle. Exit the vehicle and tap the “End Trip” button on the Mocean Carshare app. The vehicle needs to be unlocked to end the trip. This will end your trip and lock the vehicle.

  • Where can I park?

  • Do I have to do an inspection every time I enter a vehicle?

    Yes, for your own benefit you should do a thorough inspection to see if there is any damage to the vehicle (e.g., existing dents, scratches, or other damages) prior to starting your trip. This will ensure that you are not held responsible for any damage that you didn’t cause.

  • Can I extend my booking?

    The car can be rented for a maximum period of 24 hours. If you would like to extend your trip, you can contact Customer Care. They will end your current reservation, bill you for your last trip, and as soon as your payment is confirmed you will then be allowed to start a new trip.

  • How much does Mocean Carshare cost?

    When you are signing up for the service, we charge a $12 application fee. There is no monthly charge and you will be charged on a pay-per-use basis.

    Using a Mocean Carshare vehicle currently costs $0.42 a minute, $14 per hour, and $86 per day (plus applicable taxes). You will be charged a combination of the rates that equals the lowest cost for your trip.

  • What are the possible fines and additional fees?

    Please refer to the below charges:

    • Toll charge: Actual toll charge + $5 toll charge handling fee 
    • Lost parking card: $10
    • Smoking Charge: $150 + Cost of odor removal
    • Lights Left on in Vehicle: $100
    • Vehicle parked in incorrect parking space: $40
    • Lost fuel card: $10
    • Gas Less Than 1/4 Tank on Return: $40
    • Vehicle Damage: Based on deductible
    • Vehicle left unlocked: $10
    • Unclean Vehicle on Return: $50 Handling Fee + Cost of cleaning
    • Pets in Vehicles: $50
    • Abandoned Vehicle: $300 + Other Fee
    • Parking Ticket: Actual ticket price + $20 handling fee 
    • Impounded Vehicle: Cost of impound + $100 Impounded vehicle fee 
    • Declined Credit Card: $25
    • Late Return Fee: up to $50 plus any additional time over the maximum Trip time
  • How do I start the car?

    Once inside the car, step on the brake and press the “Engine Start/Stop” button in the car to start the engine.

  • Where is the key located?

    Your mobile phone acts as your key during your trip. You lock/unlock the car using the app and start the car using the car’s “Engine Start/Stop” button.

  • Do I have to pay for parking?

    During your trip, you are able to park Mocean Carshare vehicles at City of Los Angeles parking meters without payment and in excess of posted time limits.   • What happens if the car is towed during my reservation?

    While public parking fees in the City of Los Angeles are included, your vehicle still may be towed if you violate applicable parking restrictions. Please ensure you follow all parking signs and neighborhood laws while parking. In case the vehicle is towed, please call Customer Care immediately. You will be responsible for any applicable charges and fees.

  • What happens if I get a speeding ticket, traffic, or parking violation?

    You are responsible for the cost of any speeding tickets, traffic, or parking violations you incur. If you receive a parking ticket on the windshield of the car, either pay or contest the ticket immediately.

    If we receive notice of any violations that occurred up to 24 hours past your scheduled reservation end time, you will be charged the amount of the ticket plus any additional processing fees.

  • Is smoking allowed?

    No. Smoking of any kind, including vaping, is not allowed in any Mocean Carshare vehicle. Please be mindful of the members who use the car after you.

    If we find evidence that you smoked in a car, you will be responsible for the charges incurred to remove the odor.

  • Can I use toll roads? How do I pay?

    It is your responsibility to pay the cost of any tolls. The cars are not equipped with toll transponders and you will be charged any tolls incurred during your trip, plus any additional processing and late fees, after your reservation is completed. 

  • Can my pet ride with me?

    Service animals are welcomed. At this time, all other pets are not allowed. You will be charged a fee if any evidence of pets is found in the vehicle. You may be asked to provide documentation to confirm the status of your service animal.

  • Is fuel included?

    Fuel is included in the price of your trip. In case you need to refuel the car during your trip. Please use the fuel card provided in the car. This should be located on the sun visor inside the car. The PIN code for the card can be found in the fueling section in the app menu. 

  • How much fuel should I return the car with?

    You are responsible for returning the car with at least a 1/4 tank. You will be charged a fee if you fail to do so. 

  • How do I pay to fuel up?

    In case you need to refuel the car during your trip. Please use the fuel card provided in the car. This should be located on the sun visor inside the car. The PIN code for the card can be found in the fueling section in the app menu. 

  • What type of fuel should I use?

    Please fill up the tank with regular grade gasoline.

  • What if the fuel card is missing or not working?

    If you are unable to use the fuel card for any reason, please refuel the vehicle using your personal card. Save the receipt and reach out to Customer Care for reimbursement of the expense.

  • Are there any mileage restrictions?

    No, we offer unlimited mileage.

  • Which devices does the Mocean Carshare app support?

    We support Android and iOS devices. 

  • What do I do if I do not receive a verification code on my mobile phone?

    Please follow these steps: 

    • Please ensure your mobile number is correct.
    • Ensure you are in a place that has good mobile network coverage.
    • Restart the app and try again. 

    If all of the above steps don’t resolve the issue, please contact Customer Care.

  • What do I do if the app does not scan my driver's license?

    Please follow these steps: 

    • Provide permission to the app to access your camera.
    • Try using a darker background.
    • Avoid any glare on the license.
    • Hold your phone horizontally (landscape orientation)
    • Align the license within the frame on your phone.
    • Restart the app and try again.

    If all of the above steps don’t resolve the issue, please contact Customer Care. 

  • How can I update my personal details such as my home address or payment details?

    Please go to My Account section on the mobile app or website to update your information. 

  • What happens if my name changes or I get an updated driver's license?

    Please contact Customer Care in order to change or update your document details. We may need to verify that your new documents are valid through a third party per our Terms and Conditions.

  • Is insurance included?

    Mocean Carshare will provide complimentary insurance to all members with coverage up to the minimum state required levels. You will be responsible for damage to the car up to the deductible. You also may be responsible for damages if you do not follow program rules or drive recklessly. 

  • Will my payment method cover the damage fee?

    Some credit cards, or other insurance policies, may cover the insurance deductible if that is part of your card agreement. Contact your credit card or insurance company to confirm. We will charge the credit or debit card you have on file with us. 

  • How is the damage fee calculated and when is it charged?

    Please refer to the charges mentioned in the section that includes possible fines and additional fees. You will be charged for the damage once we have assessed it. 

  • Is roadside assistance included?

    Mocean Carshare will provide complimentary, in-network roadside assistance to all members. When you are in need of roadside assistance, please call Customer Care 1-833-662-3261 (833-MOCEAN1), and our Agent will assist you in connecting with the roadside assistance agent. You are responsible for staying in a safe place until the service provider arrives. When the service provider arrives, simply show your roadside assistance membership card (this should be located in the glovebox) and sign the receipt for covered expenses up to the benefit limit of $250. 

    The services include towing and non-towing activities (i.e., Tire Change, Jump Start, Fuel Deliver, Lockout). The coverage will be up to $250 benefit per event for all roadside services. The benefit covers up to a 25-mile tow. All members will be responsible to pay for fees incurred above and beyond the insurance coverage to the roadside assistance provider. Please request the receipts in order to apply for reimbursement and note that Mocean Carshare will make a final determination on the total reimbursement for each event.

  • How do I report damage?

    In case you find any damage or cause any damage to the car, please report it via the app.

  • What if the vehicle is dirty?

    Our team works hard to ensure that our vehicles are clean for your next trip. If you find that a vehicle is not clean, please submit a cleanliness report via the app. 

  • What should I do if I am involved in an accident?

    For emergency situations, please call 911. It is recommended to wait with the car until the police have completed their investigation. Be sure to request a copy of the police report. For other non-emergency situations, please call Customer Care as soon as possible. 

  • What if I lose something in the car?

    We are not responsible for the items left in a vehicle after the trip ends. We’re here to help, but we cannot guarantee that your item will be found or can be delivered to you. Please call Customer Care and let us know the details of the items lost. We will try our best to have your belongings returned.

    If you Refer a Friend to sign up for Mocean Carshare, they will receive $14 in free driving to be used on their first trip (within 45 days of signing up). Once your friend has completed their first trip, you will receive $14 in free driving in return!

    To take advantage of this program:

    • Make sure you have the latest version of the app downloaded on your Android or iOS device
    • Go to the menu in the app and select the “Refer your Friends” option
    • Send your code to your friends
    • Your friends will need to enter the code during the registration process to take advantage of the offer
    • The $14 credit will be automatically applied to their account after registration is completed
    • Your $14 credit will be automatically applied to your account after their first trip is completed
